Is my item worth anything? Things to know before requesting a valuation

At Gray’s Auctioneers, we receive hundreds of requests for free valuations each month. What we see a lot of are requests for items that, unfortunately, are of no value. Therefore, we decided to introduce this piece of content to help people understand the main things to look for before requesting an item for valuation, and also a few pointers to help you find the value of your item on your own.

What Do African Art, Jazz Recordings & Coins Have in Common?

Our next auction is a curious combination of African arts, jazz recordings and coins. Why the eclectic grouping of subjects? It is well documented that the arts of Africa were a major influence on the art and music made in the United States and Europe in the early 20th century. The art of Africa was discovered by those wealthy travelers of the early 20th century who brought back African treasures. So, too, was it the wealthy elites of the jazz age whose embrace of jazz brought it to the masses. Thus, the auction ends with money, and some of the most desirable coins of the twentieth century.

This month at Gray’s we have an extensive number of fine works on paper, rare books, and illuminated manuscripts up for auction, including an impressive collection of fine editions from the Print Club of Cleveland. Starting off the auction in Lot 1 is a print of St. George and the Dragon, 1947 by Salvador Dalí (1904-1989). While the world-renowned surrealist arguably needs no introduction, many art collectors may not realize that Dalí had an extensive history with the city of Cleveland through his patrons Reynolds and Eleanor Morse.

This month at Gray’s Auctioneers, we are delighted to highlight a collection of fine art by prominent African-American artists from our large auction of Fine Art, Furniture, Jewelry, and Decorative Art.  One unfortunate legacy of our country’s struggles with its historic racism has been the neglect of black artists by critics and collectors until recent times.  This month Gray’s is offering a number of artworks by important African-American artists in their October 10th auction.
