It’s Not Junk in the Trunk

Have you ever heard of the Florida Highwaymen? During the 50s and 60s, 26 African American landscape painters formed a group to inspire, support, create, and paint together. They challenged the status quo, battling racial and cultural barriers during turbulent times. After being rejected time and time again by galleries, they took to the streets to showcase their art, selling them in towns and cities and along roadsides throughout Florida, often still wet, out of the trunks of their cars. They were massively successful, which was remarkable considering the civil rights movements were only just beginning and Florida was experiencing violent times and social unrest. They have been called "The Last Great American Art Movement of the 20th century.

Cat’s Got Your Tongue

Remember the newsletter we sent a couple of weeks ago? We know it's all you think about ;) If you're suffering from amnesia - we spoke about the heartbreaking collection of Lalique crystals appearing in our April auction. The jewel in the crown was this French feline, who had bidders grinning from ear to ear. 

The black background and indirect lighting help magnify the crystal's unique glow as if it were lit up from the inside out. Touches like these highlight the stunning features of our lots and enhance our bidders' experience.

WTH is It? Mourning Cameo

We're taking a break from our usual irreverent tone for this week's "What the Heck is it?". Please sit down if you need to. We're not being punny. Our lovely photographer Jim took some time to talk us through this fascinating item hailing back from the American Civil War. 

Honoring the dead with a traditional ceremonial burial, surrounded by loved ones, was impossible during wartime. To grieve their dead, families improvised by creating a "Mourning Cameo." The cameo resided somewhere visible, like the fireplace in the living room, and family and friends gathered together to mourn the deceased. This fascinating object appears in our upcoming May auction.

We're collaborating with the Dorian Gray Youth Foundation and Dorian Gray Galleries for a cause that's near and dear to us.

The sad reality is that LGBTQ+ youths are 120% more likely to face homelessness. Home insecurity compromises personal safety and exposes young people to a higher likelihood of alcoholism, substance abuse, and suicide.

  2. Our experts determine if your item is of potential value

  3. If it is, we ask you to bring it to the auction house (in Cleveland) for further investigation

  4. From there, we give you an estimated value of your item

  5. We walk you through the consignment process

  6. You determine if you wish to sell it in an upcoming auction

  7. Review and sign the consignment agreement

  8. We feature your item in an upcoming auction

  9. We notify you if your item sells and send payment

  10. If your item does not sell, you decide if you wish to feature it again or not
