You Only Get One Shot

Lot No. 8 in our Fine Art, Furniture, & Decorations Auction is something special. "The Last Shot" is one of only 22 paintings that make up the "Western Series" by British-American artist Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819 - 1905).

Tait and the American general public shared a mutual obsession with the western expansion during the 19th century. Society slathered over anything that depicted heroic feats, dangerous wildlife, and skirmishes with the local population.

In "The Last Shot" Tait masterfully contrasts the vast expanse of the prairie with the gory bloodshed of the scene. Tait's devotion to detail is evident when observing the characters' attire, weapons, and expressions. The creators of the hit TV Show β€˜1883’ would surely agree with the epic scene depicted here.

The estimated sale price is $80,000 - $120,000.

Lot No. 312 and this week's "What the Heck is it'' had us scratching our heads longer than we'll ever admit. What is it exactly? Well, it's a salesman sample, of course. (Of course.) Smith & Winchester furnace salesmen used these perfectly scaled models to illustrate how the real thing would have worked for potential customers.

Our investigations show it was likely fully operational, finding some carbon residue where they would have lit the fire. We're not imagining tiny little salesmen, you're imagining tiny little salesmen.
