The Jungle VIPs

This month's auction was all about animals, and boy did they roar. Lot 127 gave Cruella De Vil a run for her money, with the 10 Cast-Iron Puppy Paperweights selling for $350 (est. $40). Wild horses couldn't keep bidders away from Lot 4, which trotted away at over four times the minimum estimate (est. $80, sold for $400). The real king of the jungle was Lot 20, going for almost TEN TIMES the original asking price (est. $80, sold for $750). Meow.

WTH is it: Fluxus

What is/are Fluxus? We'll give you three guesses before we tell you. J.K. Rowling's alternate name for Horcruxes? An embarrassing medical condition? A spy code name used during the Cold War? Wrong, wrong, and WRONG! Before Crypto, there was Fluxus. This was an experimental and avante-garde artistic movement that spanned the 1960s and 70s and embraced notable poets, artists, designers, and composers, including Yoko Ono. Fluxus placed greater importance on the artistic process than the final product. The intersection of diverse creative expressions and the overlap of different styles earned Fluxus the nickname of the "laboratory." We look at it more as a cultural incubator. Many radical (at least at that time) ideas passed through the Fluxus Finishing School and are now accepted benchmarks in the art world.

It’s a Bug’s Life

This week we explore the shocking, sinister, and scandalous. Inspired by our Blog Post "5 20th Century Artistic Scandals," we went a step further to find art that had us testing the limits of our gag reflex. We unfortunately succeeded. "Theater of the World" formed part of the Art and China After 1989 Exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, NY in 2018. Grasshoppers, geckos, crickets, and cockroaches battled for the survival of the fittest in a supposed replication of nature's life cycle. New York's Guggenheim Board of Directors demanded its removal from the exhibition display, and we can't say we've empathized with cockroaches more in our lives.

With a 93% sell-through rate at our April auction now is a great time to sell at auction. Not sure how it works? Consigning is the process of putting your belongings up for auction. It may seem confusing, but it's very straightforward. Here's how it works:

  1. Send us pictures and as much information you have about your item.

  2. Our auction expert reviews the images and information, determining if your item is of potential value.

  3. If it is, we will ask you to physically bring your item into the auction house (in Cleveland) for further investigation.

  4. From there, we give you an estimated value of your item.

  5. We walk you through the consignment process and what to expect.

  6. You determine if you wish to sell it in an upcoming auction. We will recommend a reserve (the minimum value you would accept for an item.)

  7. Review and sign the consignment agreement.

  8. We feature your item in an upcoming auction.

  9. We notify you if your item sells and send payment.

  10. If your item does not sell, you decide if you wish to feature it again or not.
